Capability mapping in Iyene
How Iyene maps applications to business capabilities, and why capability mapping is the step that turns an application inventory into a decision-making tool.
A list of applications tells you what software you run. A capability map tells you what your organization actually does — sell, onboard customers, process claims, manage inventory — and which applications support each of those activities. Iyene exists to connect the two.
Why capability mapping matters
An application inventory on its own answers "what do we have." Mapping that inventory to business capabilities is what lets a team answer the harder questions:
- Coverage — is there an application supporting this capability at all, or is it a gap?
- Overlap — do three different applications all claim to support the same capability, and is that intentional or redundant?
- Impact — if this application were retired, which capabilities would lose support?
None of those questions can be answered from a flat list of software names. They require the map.
How mapping works in Iyene
- Start from your capability map. Iyene organizes capabilities the way most enterprise architecture teams already think about them — as a structured, hierarchical set of "what the business does," independent of how it's currently implemented.
- Attach applications to capabilities. Each application in your inventory can be linked to one or more capabilities it supports.
- Review the result. Once applications are mapped, you can see capability coverage across your whole portfolio — which capabilities are well supported, which are thin, and where multiple applications overlap.
A practical starting point
You don't need a complete capability taxonomy before you begin. Start by mapping the applications tied to a single business area or initiative, see what the resulting picture tells you, and expand from there — the value of the map grows as more of the portfolio is connected to it, but a partial map is still more useful than none.
Vendors and products
Applications in your inventory are often built on third-party vendor products. Iyene backs vendor and product management with a shared global vendor catalog — link your own vendor records to a catalog entry and inherit its industry, category, and region metadata automatically rather than entering it by hand.
